BUSH TAKES OVER

THE ELECTION OF 1988

: George Bush SR. was the obvious choice for most Americans after the Reagan administration.
-Bush had loyal supporters for more than 8 years but was only in office for 4 years.
-There was more than a half dozen people that led the charge to win the presidency over Bush, but two main people were MASS. Governor Michael Dukakis and Jesse Jackson.
- Jesse Jackson had a lot of African American support, but Dukakis and Bush battled it out on the Television.
- On election day Bush received 53 percent of the popular vote to win the presidency,

The New President- Bush had a wide range to the white house,as a fighter pilot in WW2 he won a medal for bravery. - He promised a new era different than REAGAN he exclaimed.

The New President

-Bush brought a wide variety to the white house, had being a WW2 pilot and won a award for bravery.
- He said that this was a new era, and that it would be different from the Reagan era.
- The new president went along with caution, as he tried to keep some policies from Reagan, but still controll the congress with his own.

Drugs, Education, and the Environment.

- During the election Bush stated that they really needed to control the wide range of illegal drugs
- Promised a chart a new course towards a better environment.
- One major problem was that there was so much nuclear waste, and Bush wanted to get rid of it.

The Savings and Loan Crisis

- The savings put a lot of pressure on the government finances.
- Started S and Ls.
- Bush set agencies for the Failed banks in the past.

Reducing the Deficit

- The savings and Loan crisis added to the growing deficit in the federal budget.
-Through most of the 90's the government struggled over a budget to lower the deficit.
- After the act was passed the President was trying and thinking about adding new taxes to help the cost.
He also was going to set a tax-cuts for investors and their stocks.
He argued that setting the new tax-cuts and also adding the new taxes would help stimulate the government again.
- after arguing till late in the night the government and bush came to a deal, that would cut the deficit by nearly 500 billion over 5 years, Increasing taxes on ciggarates, alcohol, and gasoline.

The Election of 1990

- The new budget plan cut more deficit than any other plan in the Reagan era.
- But many Americans thought that the government in Washington D.C was wrangled over the whole thing.
They thought they saw a congress who couldn't make difficult choices.
- So far Bush was torn apart from many Americans saying that he also couldn't make a direct solution towards the budget problem.
-During the election voters saw very angry congress members, who selected many different governors for each state.
- Only 4 out of 10 eligible to vote only went to the polls, because of the ressesion. goreclinton3.jpg

Flags and the Supreme court

- Bush was angered quickly by the supreme court after an inncident were a man burned a Americans Flag and the supreme court said that they are going to make it legal because is was a form of protest.
- people felt differently about it and was very upset, saying that you were defacing the flag and the country.
- Flag burning was just one of the many problems that the supreme court faced in that time period.
- When Bush came into office he was left with a more connservitive supreme court, thats why it was so messed up.

The End of the Cold WAR

- Since the end of the WW2, the soviets and communism has dominated all of eastern europe.
- No single even during the cold war was as more important than when the BERLIN wall came down
- Americans thrilled to pictures of Germans breaking the wall down with sledgehammers.
- After the wall came down Germany met with NATO, and agreed on a timetable saying that it would stay its own country, ever since then Germany has been its own country.
- Most of the European countries resign of communism and democracy had kicked in for them, one major one was Czechoslovakia.
